Privacy notice

Who we are
CatfishTest is a UK service that checks whether photos from a dating profile have been published elsewhere on the public web. For questions about this notice or your data, email privacy@catfishtest.com.
What we process, and why
- The photos you upload. We resize them, remove embedded metadata, and send them to a reverse image search provider to find public pages where the same image appears. We also read the metadata before removing it, to note whether editing software was recorded.
- The optional name you type. Used only to compare against names found on public pages. It is stored with the report and never written to logs.
- A hashed form of your IP address. Used for rate limiting and abuse prevention. The raw address is never stored; the hash uses a salt that changes daily.
- Payment. Handled entirely by Stripe. We receive a confirmation and a session reference, never your card details.
Our lawful basis under UK GDPR is legitimate interests: helping people avoid romance fraud, which is a recognised and serious harm. We have balanced this against the interests of people whose photos may be checked, which is why we keep nothing that identifies them.
No face recognition
We do not perform facial recognition, create face embeddings, or use any face-search service. We compare images with images. We do not process biometric data and we do not build or hold a database of people.
Who sees the photos
Photos are sent to Google Cloud Vision (web detection) under Google’s data processing terms. Google does not use images sent to this API to train its models. If we add further reverse-image or AI-detection providers, we will name them here before they go live.
How long we keep things
- Uploaded photos: deleted as soon as the check completes, and in any case within one hour by an automatic storage rule.
- Reports: the headline, the public URLs found, page titles, and an image fingerprint (a perceptual hash, not the image) are kept for 30 days so your link keeps working, then deleted.
- Fingerprints and public URLs are cached for 30 days so the same photo is not re-searched needlessly.
- Misuse reports you send us are kept until resolved.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold, ask us to delete it, or object to processing by emailing the address above. Because reports are not linked to an account, please include the report link. If your photos have been checked by someone else and you want them removed from a report, use the misuse report form. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Cookies and analytics
We set no advertising cookies. A human-verification widget (Cloudflare Turnstile) runs on the upload form. If we use analytics, it will be cookie-free, aggregate page statistics only.
